Aerosol and Environment Division, affiliated with the Institute of Earth Environment, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEECAS), currently has employees of 25 and is directed by Prof. Junji CAO.
Aerosol and Environment Division focuses on the forefront issues of aerosol sciences and pressing needs of the country, playing an active role in establishing substantive and sustainable collaborations with world-renowned research groups. Successions of scientific achievements were gained from original research in the field of fugitive dust, black carbon, organic aerosol and PM2.5, results of which have produced significant impacts both nationally and internationally.
After over two decades’ efforts, Aerosol and Environment Division is stepping up on the international stage as an important organization in aerosol research.
History
Research Scope

Missions
Aerosol and Environment Division takes full advantage of a closely-integrated approach containing field experiment, laboratory analysis, and numerical modeling to address the forefront scientific questions in aerosol research, particularly aiming at the physical-chemical-biological processes of black carbon and organic aerosols as well as their impacts on climate and environment. By aligning the theoretical and technical development with our national needs, and exploring aerosol pollution control technology in industrial applications, we seek to build Aerosol and Environment Division as a frontrunner in the country and an internationally recognized group in both aerosol science and technology. The division will be constructed as a national innovation center for aerosol science and high-level training base for aerosol scientists, guiding the directions of aerosol research in China and providing substantial contributions on sustainable development of society and economy as well as the protection of environment and ecosystem.

l Combustion Experiment Platform
The combustion experiment platform consists of re-suspension Chamber, Collecting residual in combustion chamber and Re-suspension tube onto dilution system in Aerosol and Environment Division.
l Aerosol Modeling Platform
To meet the increasing demands for data storage and computing speed in aerosol modeling, our lab has been equipped with IBM Blade Servers (28 pieces, 336 cores in total) which are based on Intel Nehalem Processor. Each server contains the newly-developed Xeon 6C X5675 Processor, which largely improves the computing power and memory bandwidth of single systems in the continuation of high-performance architecture, providing a platform for simulation and calculation. The Bluefire server in US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) is also available for researchers in Aerosol and Environment Division.
