Subject:  Two global environmental issues: Particle health effects and toxic chemical flame retardants

Speaker:  Dr. Donald Lucas

Time: 9:00-11:00 am, Oct 31, 2014(Friday)

Location: Room 1102, IEECAS (In Yanxiang Road)

Dr. Donald Lucas is a staff scientist in the Environmental Energy Technologies Division of the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, where he is a Principal Investigator in the Combustion Group. He has been at LBL since 1980. He also has an appointment as a Professional Research Scientist in the School of Public Health and as an affiliate in the Energy and Resources Group at the University of California, Berkeley. His principal areas of research are combustion generated air pollutants, experimental chemical kinetics, novel diagnostic techniques for hazardous species, and combustion chemistry. He has received funding from the Department of Energy, the Environmental Protection Agency, the National Institute of Environmental Health, the California Toxics Substance Teaching and Research Program, the State of California, and the Western States Petroleum Association.

Dr. Lucas received his B.S. in chemistry from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1972, and his Ph.D. in physical chemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1977.  He was a Research Associate at Indiana University from 1977 to 1980. He has served as a lecturer and visiting professor in the Department of Chemistry at Indiana University, and in the Mechanical Engineering and Chemistry Departments at the University of California, Berkeley. He has served on six Ph.D. Thesis Committees for the University of California, Berkeley.

He is a member of the American Chemical Society, The Combustion Institute, the American Association for Aerosol Research, and Sigma Xi. He serves on the executive committee of the Western States Section of the Combustion Institute, and is currently the Program Chair. He served as a technical advisor for the California Institute for Energy Efficiency, and as a reviewer for numerous federal, state, and local agencies and journals, and as an expert witness. Dr. Lucas has supervised the research of undergraduate students, M.S. candidates, and Ph.D. candidates, and laboratory technical staff. He has developed and introduced science experiments in the kindergarten and primary grades, and worked with high school students through Lawrence Hall of Science programs.
