Location :American Geophysical Union (AGU) Bestows Roger Revelle Medal upon Prof. AN Zhisheng
On September 13, 2023, the American Geophysical Union (AGU), the world's largest Earth and space science association, unveiled the recipient of the esteemed Roger Revelle Medal. The honor was bestowed upon Prof. An Zhisheng, affiliated with the Institute of Earth Environment at the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The Roger Revelle Medal, among AGU's most prestigious accolades, recognizes Prof. An Zhisheng's outstanding contributions to the field.
On December 13, 2023, AGU hosted an Honors Ceremony in San Francisco, where the AGU President-Elect, Dr. Brandon Jones introduced that Roger Revelle Medal is to honor outstanding contributions in atmospheric sciences, atmosphere-ocean coupling, atmosphere-land coupling, biogeochemical cycles, climate or related aspects of the Earth system. Prof. AN Zhisheng has pioneered research on Chinese loess, Asian monsoon dynamics and global climate change. Through his research and leadership, he has played a transforming role in enriching the earth system sciences.
Via an online video, Prof. AN Zhisheng expressed his appreciation to AGU, extending his thanks to nominators, supporters, as well as colleagues from the Institute of Earth Environment of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and his family.
In his address, He underscored that the receipt of the Medal serves not only as a personal acknowledgement but also as an affirmation of the contributions of Chinese geoscientists in their quest to understand the Earth's complex systems. He pointed out that the challenges of climate change were urgent, and called for collaborative efforts, welcoming the new generation and the emerging young scientists to work together with his own.
Furthermore, he highlighted the necessity of continued partnerships between China and the United States are essential for the shared mission to make further progress in addressing climate issues.
