TITLE: An ecosystem approach to chemical risk assessment

REPORTER: Professor Lorraine Maltby (The University of Sheffield, UK)

TIME:14:30, 19, Jul., 2013

SITE:Lecture Hall on the 2nd floor of IEECAS building

Professor Lorraine Maltby is the Head of Department of Life Sciences, The University of Sheffield, UK. Her research is concerned with understanding the impact of anthropogenic activities on freshwater ecosystems and their catchments. A major research aim is to gain a mechanistic understanding of key ecosystem services and the ecological processes that underpin them, and to investigate how they are affected by anthropogenic inputs and activities. The output from this research is used to inform environmental decision making and to influence policy development and implementation. Current research topics include: pesticide risk assessment; urban river management; floodplain restoration; ecological impacts of micro-hydro schemes; aquatic-riparian interactions; stream invertebrate and algal ecology.

She is the members of European Centre for Ecotoxicology and Toxicology of Chemicals Scientific Committee (2010 - ), Pond Conservation Board of Trustees (2010 - ), NERC Peer Review College (2010 - ), Freshwater Biological Association Council (2009 - ), European Food Standards Agency Expert Working group (2009 - ), Catchment Science Centre Management Board (2005 - ), Canadian Research Chairs Programme College of Reviews (2005 - ), DEFRA Peer Review College (2004 - ). She was awarded the Exceptional Service Award in 2005 and Environmental Education Award in 2009 by the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry.
