The Institute of Earth Environment Chinese Academy of Sciences (IEECAS) was established in Xi'an in 1999,it is based on the Stay Key Laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology, CAS , which was founded through the efforts of Prof. Liu Tunghseng, An Zhisheng and others in 1985.IEECAS is engaged in fundamental scientific unknowns responding to urgent needs from the nation and society, IEECAS carries out missions of regional and global climatic and environmental changes at different time scales, on the aspects of their history, pattern and tendency, process and mechanism as well as seeking countermeasure solutions.IEECAS is making all efforts to reach its goal of becoming an international base in the field of continental environment research and training , to improve ability of predicting future climate change and possible consequences so to contribute to the sustainable development of society and economy.

　  At present,IEECAS is composed of four research units,Xi'an-AMS centre (jointly built with Xi'an Jiaotong University,supported by Chinese Academy of Sciences,Ministry of Education and Ministry of Science and Technology) Paleo- environment Lab, Recent Environmental process Lab, Aerosol and Environment Lab. In addition,it hosts State Key Laboratory of Loess and Quaternary Geology (SKLLQG) which has been apprised 5 times in row as Excellent Laboratories by Ministry of Science and Technology and Natural Science Foundation of China.In 2004,SKLLQG was honored as State Key Laboratories Development Program Advanced Group.IEECAS currently holds 59 scientific or technical personnel out of total 65 staff,including 1 CAS Member,and 41 research scientists.In addition,there are over 50 visiting scientists apart from 88 graduate students,3 postdoctorals.IEECAS is well equipped with a 3Mv Accelerator Mass Spectrometry,2G-755R U-channel  Superconducting Rock Magnetometers,MAT-252 & Delta plus,Laser practical  Analyzer, X-Ray Diffraction,Carbon Analyzer,TL/OSL and Lenovo 1800 Cluster  etc.
　  IEECAS enjoys long established international cooperation with academic institutions of the world,including those of U.S.,U.K., France,Germany, Austria,Canada,Japan,Australia,the Netherlands, Korea,Russia,Sweden,etc.The institute is rapidly gaining reputation as a world-renowned center for continental environment research and training.
